The Range Rover Velar has achieved a five-star Euro NCAP rating

The fourth member of the Range Rover family scored 93 per cent for adult occupant protection, 85 per cent for child occupant protection and 74 per cent for pedestrian protection.

Velar features a comprehensive suite of safety systems, including Autonomous Emergency Braking with Pedestrian Detection. The advanced technology can detect a collision risk with cars or pedestrians in the road ahead and automatically apply the brakes. The system was awarded a maximum six marks in the Pedestrian detection tests by Euro NCAP’s testers.

By combining strong crash protection with advanced active safety systems, the Velar helps drivers to avoid accidents while providing excellent security to mitigate the effects of a collision if the worst does happen.

The light, stiff and exceptionally strong aluminium intensive body provides the foundation for a five-star Euro NCAP score. Allied to pioneering suspension technology and a comprehensive range of driver assistance systems, the new Range Rover Velar is not just one of the most beautiful SUVs in the world – it’s also one of the safest. NICK ROGERS, EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR, PRODUCT ENGINEERING, JAGUAR LAND ROVER

Range Rover Velar secured an overall Euro NCAP rating of 83 per cent and is available with an all-star cast of advanced driver assistance systems including:

> Autonomous Emergency Braking with Pedestrian Detection uses a forward-facing stereo camera to determine if a collision is imminent – full braking is triggered automatically to avoid collisions altogether, or to mitigate the effects

> Reverse Traffic Detection uses radar to monitor vehicles approaching from either side when reversing. An orange warning illuminates in the door mirrors to alert the driver to any potential danger

> Matrix-Laser LED headlights extend the range of full beam to 550 metres. The Adaptive Front Lighting system matches the light beam to the steering wheel angle, while the matrix technology selectively dims individual LEDs to maintain optimum light distribution without dazzling oncoming traffic

> Lane Keep Assist detects unintentional lane drift and applies corrective counter-steering to maintain lane position

> Driver Condition Monitor senses driver fatigue by monitoring steering, brake and accelerator inputs to provide alerts when tiredness is detected

> Intelligent Speed Limiter adjusts the vehicle speed when entering new speed limit zones

> Traffic Sign Recognition informs the driver of the current speed limit using the driver’s message centre instrumentation screen

Euro NCAP Five-Star Rating for New Opel Grandland X

In its latest safety ratings published today, Euro NCAP awarded the all-new Opel Grandland X compact SUV (Sport Utility Vehicle) the maximum five stars, based on good assessments in the four safety areas adult occupant protection, child occupant protection, pedestrian protection and safety assist.

Euro NCAP also tested the optional Automatic Emergency Braking system, which Grandland X customers can order on top of the standard safety equipment. According to Euro NCAP, the system performed well in the tests.

As well as Automatic Emergency Braking, the Opel Grandland X offers additional first-class assistance and safety systems. Driver Drowsiness Alert, for example, can detect typical signs of fatigue and remind drivers to take regular breaks during long journeys. Opel’s new challenger in the hotly contested SUV market also delivers optimum nighttime visibility without dazzling others. The optional AFL LED headlamps produce a bright white light that effectively turns night into day and automatically adapt to the driving situation.

Peace of mind for Grandland X drivers is available from Opel OnStar. In addition to offering services such as Stolen Vehicle Assistance or a Wi-Fi Hotspot for outstanding connectivity, the personal connectivity and service assistant can help tired drivers find a carpark[2] or book a hotel room[3] . If an emergency should occur, the “guardian angel” automatically responds to crashes, connecting vehicle occupants to a helpful advisor, not a machine.
