Grand Vitara SUV to be Relaunched by Maruti

SuzukiGrandVitaraBesides the iconic 800, Maruti Suzuki India also offered a sports utility vehicle known as the Maruti Gypsy. The car had become a rage in the late nineties. But that was it as the Indian car maker didn’t get any more exciting SUVs. However, a few years ago, they also released the Grand Vitara SUV.

Surprisingly, that car didn’t make an impact much to Maruti’s dismay. Now Indian newspaper, The Economic Times, is reporting that Maruti Suzuki has plans to re-launch the Grand Vitara, their high-end sports utility vehicle. It is expected to feature a 2400 cc engine and will be priced a tad higher than the current model. A spokesperson from the company declined to comment on the re-launch of Grand Vitara.

However, it seems that someone who was aware with the development at the automaker has pointed out the re-launch could take place sometime next month. MSI surely would be concerned with the present sales as it fell to 270 vehicles in FY09 compared to the 795 units that were sold last year. The GV 2.4, as it will be known after the re-launch, will take on the likes of Captiva, Tucson, Pajero, Outlander and even the Endeavour as well as the forthcoming Fortuner and Yeti.
