What Car? names the Hyundai IONIQ as Best Hybrid at 2018 award ceremony

Hyundai Motor scooped another top accolade at the 2018 What Car? Awards. The IONIQ Hybrid was named as the UK’s ‘Best Hybrid’, while the high-performance i30 N was commended as the ‘Best Hot Hatch for £20,000-£30,000’.

The awards, judged by members of the What Car? road-test and editorial team, praised the IONIQ Hybrid for its cost, equipment and driveability and the all-round performance capability of the i30N.

Steve Huntingford, Editor of What Car? said, “In the last year, we’ve seen a huge increase in the number of people reading about hybrid cars on whatcar.com, which is why we felt it was important to recognise the best models in the class.

Toyota may have had the market for affordable hybrids pretty much sewn up with the Prius but now there’s a top-notch alternative in the shape of Hyundai’s IONIQ. More than any other car, the IONIQ shows that you can now drive a hybrid without having to accept any compromises. Not only is it clean, temptingly priced and cheap to run, but it’s more practical, better equipped and better to drive than its rivals. ”

Hyundai’s all-new i30 N high-performance hatchback was acknowledged as the Best Hot Hatch for £20,000-£30,000, with the What Car? team praising both the i30N and the i30N Performance’s cornering talents, playful handling, and accessible prices. Both models feature electronically controlled suspension, torque vectoring, launch control and rev-matching as standard.

What Car? Editor, Steve Huntingford, said: “If you had told us a year ago that Hyundai would soon have one of the world’s best hot hatches in its ranks, we’d have been dubious to say the least. But the Korean brand really has gone from zero to hero, bettering established rivals such as the Focus ST and the Volkswagen Golf GTI with its first serious attempt at building a car in this class.”

Tony Whitehorn, President and CEO, Hyundai Motor UK, said, “We are hugely proud to see the IONIQ take top honours as the UK’s Best Hybrid. The IONIQ is representative of the shift that is currently taking place in the car market where consumers are now embracing low emission alternatives. The IONIQ which is available in Hybrid, Plug-In and Electric versions means that we are able to offer even greater choice for our customers.

“The i30 N is also another good example of offering choice – it is our first hot hatch and its all-round package of style, equipment, price and state-of-the art high performance technologies make it a fast and fun alternative to the more established names.”

The IONIQ and i30 N both come with Hyundai’s industry-leading five-year unlimited mileage warranty and roadside assistance package. Standard equipment also includes the latest active safety features, such as Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist, Lane Keeping Assist, and Intelligent Speed Limit Warning.

Rolls-royce Ghost Extended Wheelbase Awarded Best Super-luxury Car By What Car? Magazine

Rolls-royce Ghost Extended Wheelbase Awarded Best Super-luxury Car By What Car? Magazine

A panel of highly-esteemed judges from What Car? magazine has once again declared the Rolls-Royce Ghost the best super-luxury car in the world in its most prestigious class: luxury cars over £100,000.

In awarding Ghost Extended Wheelbase the What Car? honour, judges celebrated the motor car’s peerless duality, which combines vibrant driving dynamics with a near-silent and truly cocooning passenger suite.

“If money is no object, then treat yourself to the Ghost’s almost ethereal quietness, storming V12 engine and seats which are the most comfortable you’re likely to find in any car.”

Torsten Müller-Ötvös, Chief Executive, Rolls-Royce Motor Cars, said, “Recognition of Ghost Extended Wheelbase by What Car? further strengthens its standing as the highly-successful entrepreneur’s choice of motor car. Ghost continues to stand for a contemporary and more informal manifestation of the brand and, as such, has become the unequivocal choice of pioneers and tastemakers as they ascend through their fields.”

Ghost Extended Wheelbase’s marriage of the very latest technology and contemporary design has become the consummate motor car for entrepreneurs since its launch in 2011. Maximising the indulgent proportions of an Extended Wheelbase, this new generation of highly-successful and influential young people continue to challenge the Bespoke artisans at the Home of Rolls-Royce in Goodwood, England, to interpret the marque in their own image. In 2016, Rolls-Royce Motor Cars presented a transformative moment in luxury with the introduction of the Black Badge series. This darker design expression and more urgent engineering treatment of Ghost was a truly Bespoke response to a new breed of highly creative and dynamic patrons of luxury.

This honour, and true measure of success in the automotive world, is reflected with sustained customer demand. It also follows numerous plaudits for Rolls-Royce in recent months as New Phantom retains the title of “Best Car in the World”, continuing to earn praise from the world’s most prestigious and discerning critics, including statements that Phantom “Is the pinnacle, the epitome, of motoring luxury” (Autocar), “An all-new version of the finest car in the world” (The Independent), “Has changed what a car can be” (GQ) as well receiving ‘Best Luxury Car’ at the UK Car of the Year Awards and Top Gear Magazine’s ‘Luxury Car of the Year’.

Nissan LEAF named ‘Best Electric Car’ at 2018 What Car? Awards

Nissan LEAF named ‘Best Electric Car’ at 2018 What Car? Awards

The all-new 2018 Nissan LEAF has been named “Best Electric Car” at the 2018 What Car? Awards, just as the world’s best-selling, zero-emission vehicle is being launched to European media at the “Nissan Electric Ecosystem Experience” in Tenerife, Spain.

What Car? are one of the most widely recognized and respected awards amongst car buyers in Europe. They are also one of the UK’s biggest car-buying media brands, widely regarded as a trusted source for new car advice.

Steve Huntingford, Editor of What Car?, praised the award-winning model, saying: “The electric car market has never been more competitive, yet the LEAF saw off all its rivals because it makes the most sense to most buyers. It combines excellent performance with generous standard equipment and low running costs. And even in winter weather, its real-world range is good.”

The EV market in the UK is growing and now accounts for around a fifth of LEAF sales in Europe. At the recent Nissan Electric Ecosystem Experience, Nissan also revealed that just three months since the new Nissan LEAF was announced, it has already received over 12,000 orders for the latest model. That is one sold every 12 minutes in Europe.

Nissan’s xStorage was also “Commended” in the “Technology Award” category, an accolade which recognizes innovative new technology developments. Nissan’s xStorage system uses recycled batteries from electric vehicles, allowing you to store power when prices fall, and even sell excess power from your Leaf back to the energy grid.

“The new Nissan LEAF is the most advanced and accessible 100% electric vehicle on the planet,” said Philippe Saillard, Senior Vice President, Sales and Marketing, Nissan Europe. “We’re delighted to receive such an accolade from the prestigious automotive brand, What Car?. This is a car that is more enjoyable, more connected and more exciting to drive than any other mainstream electric vehicle in history. It is simply amazing.”

The all-new LEAF offers a significant update over the previous model with dynamic new styling, advanced technologies and a higher capacity drivetrain that delivers significant increases in both range and power.

The 2018 LEAF is also the first Nissan model in Europe to feature Nissan’s autonomous ProPILOT technology as well as e-Pedal, which allows drivers to start, accelerate, decelerate and stop simply by increasing or decreasing the pressure applied to the accelerator.

Customer deliveries of New Leaf will commence progressively across Europe from early February 2018.

About Nissan LEAF
The new Nissan LEAF is the embodiment of Nissan Intelligent Mobility a consumer proposition that encompasses three main pillars:

Intelligent Power, which is brought to life through the LEAF’s advanced new 40kWh e-powertrain, with improved energy efficiency, increased torque and power output for more exciting driving.

Intelligent Driving, which is technology designed to improve driving confidence, enhance safety and reduce stress.

Intelligent Integration, the linking of the car to wider society via connectivity and to energy grids via unique bi-directional charging technology.

Much more than just a 100% electric vehicle, the LEAF is a whole new driving experience, designed to move people with greater exhilaration, confidence and connection to the world around them.

The Nissan LEAF has won a total of 114 awards across the globe. Highlights include:
