Maserati celebrated the milestone delivery of its 100,000th car

China’s distinction as the Quattroporte’s largest market as well as its 91% year-on-year sales growth in 2016 underline the Chinese market’s important role in Maserati’s global performance, which set a new record with 42,100 car deliveries worldwide last year.

Maserati has taken centre stage with a historic moment at Auto Shanghai 2017, presenting its 100,000th car, a 2017 Quattroporte GranSport manufactured at the Avv. Giovanni Agnelli Plant in Italy, to the honoured Chinese owner. Featuring a solid-white exterior and an elegant shade of tan inside, this Quattroporte GranSport is fitted with 21″ Titano rims and features eye-catching red brake calipers. The colour combination perfectly reflects the brand’s legendary heritage of elegance and passion for performance.

Reid Bigland, Head of Maserati, officially unveiled car No. 100,000 at the press conference and announced its honoured owner, a successful and impressive young lady.

“China is Maserati’s largest market for Quattroporte in the world,” said Mr. Bigland. “Our remarkable performance in China last year was a major contributor to our record-breaking global sales. China’s elites are increasingly enamoured by the Italian brand of luxury, exquisite craftsmanship and passion for driving that are poured into every Maserati.”

Mirko Bordiga, Managing Director of Maserati China, provided additional context for the brand’s recent momentum. “Maserati has been in China for over twelve years,” he explained. “Our 2016 sales figures show a significant rise over those of 2015. We attribute this success not only to the fantastic line-up of cars we have launched, but also to Chinese consumers’ growing appreciation for Maserati’s unique lifestyle proposition.”

In 2016, Maserati’s sales volume in China broke 12,000, which marks an incredible 120-fold increase over the 100 sales made in 2004, the company’s first year operating in China. Today, Maserati has around 30,000 customers in China, 38 percent of whom are women. Maserati’s elegant aesthetics, unparalleled craftsmanship, seductive engine sound and thrilling driving experience have truly captured the hearts of China’s discerning new generation of business elites.

Over the past 100 years, Maserati has perfected the craftsmanship of super-luxury cars, engineering and producing each car entirely in Italy. Visitors to Auto Shanghai 2017 can take in an impressive line-up, featuring: Quattroporte, Maserati’s flagship sedan; Levante, the brand’s first-ever SUV; and the always-breath-taking Ghibli sporty sedan.

Maserati Alfieri Concept Car

Maserati Alfieri Concept Car

The sculptors of Alfieri

The deep, concave grille lacks the normal chrome surround at the bottom, so it seems to float. The glasshouse area is clean, and the rear end has its corners cut back. Right here, Marco Tencone explained, is one of the clearest differences between Italian and, say, German design languages.

“The idea of the rear is to not have a lot of metal at the rear behind the wheel. This is a sort of trick. The way to play with the volumes [of the shapes] is close to the heart of the Italian way to think about cars. In the Italian school, the idea has always been to play with [shapes] to make the cars look lighter than they really are.”

He went on to explain that the German designers don’t necessarily care if they show a strong, heavy looking car. For Italians, however, “the light weight and feel of the design is very important, and that’s why we balance the round and the square. Everything is pulled in so as not to give the feeling of a massive car. You see a lot of athletic Italian designs, but not many muscular Italian designs.”

Inspiration

More than just a modernization of the A6 GCS, the Alfieri is a reduction in complexity, a more compact and aggressive model that takes a modern interpretation of the A6 GCS’s spirit and recreates it into something new. The result is not retro, but a retro-inspired car that says a lot about the design DNA of the Maserati of the future.

Long Awaited Renaissance

The seats are leather, as is the dash and centre console. Several significant features—such as the gear lever and clock—are hewn from solid blocks of aluminium. There are some areas where the link to the A6 GCS is abundantly clear: the long, long front bumper line only ending midway along the doors, for example, and the light feel to the chamfered tail. But the concept is like nothing seen from Maserati in a very long time, and serves as a reminder of the Maserati brand’s deep-rooted racing heritage.

Maserati GranCabrio

Maserati GranCabrio

Maserati GranCabrio

The Maserati GranCabrio, the first four-seater convertible in the Trident carmaker’s history, will make its world wide debut on September 15, 2009 at the Frankfurt Motor Show. The introduction of the Maserati GranCabrio – the Trident’s third prong – completes Maserati’s product line-up that now consists of three different families of models: Quattroporte, GranTurismo, GranCabrio.

The Maserati GranCabrio represents the very essence of Maserati in terms of open-top cars. It’s a Maserati in the purest sense of the word: from the unmistakable style by Pininfarina to the spacious interior, from the craftsmanship of each detail to the driving pleasure and performance. The Maserati GranCabrio enriches all five senses in a shared open-air experience, without sacrificing comfort and performance. A dream car designed and built for men and women who love to live life in an understated – though sophisticated – manner. Like all the made in Maserati open-top convertibles: special cars aimed at refined connoisseurs.

In fact the Maserati GranCabrio is continuing the Maserati tradition in open-top cars, joining models that have played such an important part in the Modena carmaker’s history such as the 1950 A6G Frua Spyder, 1960 3500GT Vignale Spyder, 1964 Mistral Spyder, 1968 Ghibli Spyder and 2001 Maserati Spyder designed by Giorgetto Giugiaro, the car that marked Maserati’s return to the United States. In the footsteps of tradition, the Maserati GranCabrio opens a new chapter, because never before have four-seater top-down models ever been produced at the Viale Ciro Menotti Maserati factory. Four proper seats, so that the rear passengers are not merely supporting actors, but co-stars of the journey.

The Maserati GranCabrio is powered by a 4.7 litre V8, 323 kW engine and is the convertible with the longest wheelbase on the market. The GranCabrio’s roof is strictly canvas-made, emphasizing the link with the Maserati tradition.

Maserati Quattroporte Sport GT S

The new Maserati Quattroporte Sport GT S sets yet another milestone in terms of sportiness in the high performance luxury saloon segment of the automotive market. Conceived and developed as “a real driving machine in the guise of a luxury saloon”, the Quattroporte Sport GT S is the ultimate expression of Maserati’s sportiness in the Quattroporte range.

The technical changes to the new Maserati Quattroporte Sport GT S in respect to the Quattroporte S concern four areas:

  • the mapping of the V8 4.7 litre engine, with power increased to 323kW;
  • the gearshift management software, with new features designed to increase driving enjoyment;
  • the front and rear suspension system featuring single-rate dampers, stiffer springs and lower ride height;
  • the sports exhaust controlled by pneumatic valves for a deep, throaty and captivating sound.

The sportier and more aggressive look is also evident due to the interior and exterior stylistic choices:

  • the new black grille with concave vertical fins featuring the Trident logo with red accents, typical of the sportier versions of Maserati models;
  • the new headlights, in metallic titanium finish;
  • the side and rear “shadow line”, which includes black finishing around the doors, body-coloured door handles and black twin oval exhaust pipes;
  • the new M-design seats with perforated Alcantara® and leather upholstery;
  • the standard trim in Titantex, a “titanium coloured” composite material.
