2017 Alfa Romeo Giulia Named IIHS Top Safety Pick+

In its inaugural model year, the 2017 Alfa Romeo Giulia mid-size premium sedan earns a 2017 Top Safety Pick+ (TSP+) rating** from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS).

“The Giulia represents the height of Alfa Romeo engineering and technology so no effort was spared when it came to the vehicle’s performance and safety features,” said Reid Bigland, Head of Alfa Romeo. “We’re honored to receive this award from IIHS as it shows our commitment to creating state-of-the-art vehicles.”

The TSP+ designation is contingent upon achieving ratings of “good” in five IIHS crashworthiness evaluations. The 2017 Alfa Romeo Giulia achieves “good” – the highest possible rating – in each.

To achieve the 2017 TSP+ designation, vehicles must also perform well in IIHS’ Automatic Emergency Braking (AEB) system and Headlamp evaluations. The Giulia achieved a rating of “superior,” the highest possible rating for AEB, as well as a “good” rating for headlamps, which is also the highest rating.

Safety and Security
The all-new Alfa Romeo Giulia offers innovative safety and security features and leverages state-of-the-art driver-assist features. The latest Alfa Romeo premium mid-size sedan offers driver-assistance features that include:

  • Full-speed Forward Collision Warning – Plus with Full Stop: provides autonomous braking and, under certain circumstances, slows or brings the vehicle to a full stop when a frontal collision is imminent
  • Adaptive Cruise Control – Plus with Full Stop: helps to maintain distance from the vehicle ahead and, under certain traffic conditions, the system can bring the Giulia to a full stop without driver intervention and resume driving once the vehicle ahead has moved forward
  • Lane Departure Warning: alerts the driver of an inadvertent lane departure

To assist the driver both on the road and in parking situations, Blind-spot Monitoring, Rear Cross Path detection and front- and rear-park assist sensors are offered on Giulia.

In addition, the Alfa Romeo Giulia features advanced multistage driver and front-passenger air bags; driver and front-passenger seat-mounted side air bags (pelvic-thorax); front and rear side curtain air bags; and driver and front-passenger inflatable knee air bags.

** The TSP+ designation applies to any 2017 model-year Alfa Romeo Giulia produced after May 2017 equipped with Forward Collision Warning-Plus – an option at only $500 MSRP – and bi-xenon projector headlamps (35W) featuring adaptive forward lighting and auto-leveling.

The 2018 Honda Odyssey has continued its longstanding safety leadership by earning the highest safety ratings of TOP SAFETY PICK+ from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) and a 5-Star Overall Vehicle Score from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). Odyssey earns TOP SAFETY PICK+ when equipped with available Honda Sensing® and LED headlights. Honda Sensing is now standard on EX and above trims, accounting for 99 percent of 2018 Odyssey sales1.

The model earned a TOP SAFETY PICK+ rating as a result of scores on crashworthiness tests, earning GOOD ratings across the board, and with the help of two additions for the 2018 model year: available Honda Sensing and LED headlights. The Collision Mitigation Braking System™ in the new Odyssey, which is included in the Honda Sensing suite of advanced safety and driver-assistive technologies, earned a SUPERIOR rating as a result of its performance in IIHS collision avoidance tests. In track tests at 12 mph and 25 mph, an Odyssey equipped with Honda Sensing avoided the collisions. The Odyssey Elite and Touring trims, accounting for 42 percent of 2018 Odyssey sales1, earn an ACCEPTABLE rating for their LED reflector headlights. The two trims include high-beam assist, a feature that automatically switches between high beams and low beams, depending on the presence of other vehicles.

To earn the 2017 TOP SAFETY PICK+ award, a vehicle must earn a rating of GOOD in the small overlap front, moderate overlap front, side, roof strength and head restraint tests. It also must have an available front crash prevention system with an ADVANCED or SUPERIOR rating and headlights that earn an ACCEPTABLE or GOOD rating.

The Odyssey achieved a 5-star Overall Vehicle Score in the NHTSA’s New Car Assessment Program (NCAP) by scoring 5 stars in the frontal crash tests for driver and passenger, 5 stars for side crash tests for both front and rear seats and pole, and 4 stars in the rollover test.

Honda vehicles offer a broad range of active and passive safety features, including Honda Sensing, which can help drivers avoid a collision or mitigate its severity. There are more than 500,000 vehicles equipped with Honda Sensing on U.S. roads today. Honda Sensing is part of the pathway for the company’s goal to introduce vehicles with highly automated driving capability in most driving situations (SAE Level 4). Honda Sensing technologies include Collision Mitigation Braking System™ (CMBS™) with Forward Collision Warning (FCW), Road Departure Mitigation (RDM) with Lane Departure Warning (LDW), Lane Keeping Assist System (LKAS) and Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC). Mazda Motor Corporation has announced that all U.S.-specification 2017 Mazda models tested by the U.S. Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), including the all-new Mazda CX-5, have been awarded the nonprofit organization’s highest safety rating, Top Safety Pick+, when equipped with optional front crash prevention and adaptive LED headlights.

IIHS evaluates crashworthiness with five tests: moderate and small overlap frontal crashes, a side crash, a roof strength test and a head restraint and seat test that simulates a rear impact. In addition, headlight performance and frontal crash prevention by means of auto-braking and forward collision warning systems are evaluated.

Mazda models tested for 2017 were the Mazda CX-9, Mazda CX-3, Mazda3, Mazda6 and most recently, the all-new Mazda CX-5. Each received the Institute’s highest Top Safety Pick+ rating when equipped with optional front crash prevention and adaptive LED headlights.

According to IIHS, Mazda is the only automaker out of 16 OEMs to receive Top Safety Pick+ ratings for all 2017 models tested so far this year. The results were possible because all models performed well in the newly added headlight performance category, as well as existing crashworthiness evaluation categories.

These technologies include auto-braking to prevent or mitigate collisions and adaptive headlights that enhance visibility at night by automatically adjusting the area and range of illumination – technologies proven to offer good preventative safety performance in the latest round of testing by IIHS. The SKYACTIV-Body, part of the SKYACTIV TECHNOLOGY range, is lightweight for fun driving, yet provides excellent collision safety performance, as IIHS test results show. In developing it, Mazda engineers returned to the first principles of body design and reviewed structures, materials and construction methods in pursuit of the ultimate vehicle body.
