Isuzu and Honda Accelerate Green Logistics with GIGA FUEL CELL Heavy-Duty Truck Testing

Isuzu Motors Limited and Honda Motor Co., Ltd. have initiated on-road demonstration testing in Japan for the GIGA FUEL CELL, a heavy-duty truck powered by a fuel cell (FC). This collaborative venture aims to collect data, accumulate insights, and address technical challenges in preparation for the anticipated market introduction in 2027. The ongoing public road testing, set to conclude in September 2024, utilizes the same prototype model showcased at the Isuzu Group booth during the JAPAN MOBILITY SHOW 2023.

Objectives:

  1. Purpose: Collaborating with Isuzu Logistics Co., Ltd. and Honda Logistics Inc., logistics arms of Isuzu Group and Honda Group, the demonstration testing evaluates the GIGA FUEL CELL’s potential for hydrogen fuel utilization and the practicality of FC trucks.
  2. Background: Isuzu and Honda envision hydrogen-powered FC technology as a key contributor to achieving carbon neutrality in heavy-duty trucks. Since their joint research agreement in January 2020, the companies have worked on verifying the compatibility of FC systems and heavy-duty trucks, establishing foundational technologies, and plan to launch a production model in 2027.

Details of the Demonstration Driving:

  • Period (Planned): December 2023 to September 2024
  • Location (Planned): Kanto area (Tochigi, Saitama, Tokyo, and Kanagawa prefectures)
  • Responsible Companies: Isuzu Logistics and Honda Logistics
  • Number of Test Vehicles: 1

Key Verification Points:

  1. Practicality:
    • Evaluation of the heavy-duty FC truck’s practicality in cargo handling and on public roads.
    • Vehicle operation management, including hydrogen refueling.
  2. Vehicle Development:
    • Market compatibility of heavy-duty trucks.
